Christening and Baptism

Christening is also known as 'baptism' in the church. At a child's christening parents thank God for the gift of life make a decision to start your child on the journey of Christian faith and ask for the Church's support. Adults may also want to be baptised and our churches welcome people of all ages who would like to make a commitment of faith and be baptised, becoming part of the worldwide church family.

If you would like your child to be Christened you need to be aware of the commitment you and your godparents will make. You will promise to help your child, by teaching and example, to be a regular member of the church. We hope to be able to encourage you in this commitment, and look forward to welcoming you at one of our services.

Thanksgiving for the Gift of a Child

The birth or adoption of a child is an important event and cause for celebration. Many people are overcome by a sense of awe at the creation of new life and want to express their thanks to God but don’t necessarily wish to make the serious promises that are involved in baptism.

The service of Thanksgiving for the Gift of Child provides an opportunity for parents and families to give thanks for the birth or adoption and to pray for family life.

The service is not the same as Baptism, which is the sacrament of receiving into membership of the Church, the Body of Christ. If you would like to discuss this futher please contact us.
